Day 1: Welcome to Japan

  • Touch down in Tokyo, ready for the start of your art school trip to Japan! Be greeted at arrivals by an enthusiastic Adventure Leader, ready to transfer to the accommodation. Once checked in and unpacked, come together for a trip briefing. Here, the guide will explain the week’s plans, provide advice on adapting to local culture, and outline how to stay safe.
  • In the evening, get the best view of the Tokyo skyline with a trip up to the top of the Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building.

Day 2: Tokyo

  • For your first morning in Tokyo, visit the beautiful Meiji Shrine, dedicated to the Emperor Meiji and his wife who began Japan’s transformation from a feudal to a modern society. Then, move on to the Harajuku district, Tokyo’s cultural epicentre, to see pokemon, punks, goths and fashionistas. Anything goes in Harajuku!
  • After lunch explore the stunning Mori Art Museum, a contemporary art museum with a global outlook, presenting cutting-edge visual arts, architecture, design and other modes of creative practice from around the world from its own unique viewpoint.
  • Pay a visit to the famous Shibuya Crossing. It’s arguably one of the most iconic modern sights in Tokyo! Next, we will visit Japan’s first official Nintendo store. Here visitors will find many products featuring popular Nintendo game characters including Super Mario, Splatoon, Zelda and Animal Crossing.

Day 3: Tokyo

  • Visit the Tokyo National Museum, which houses one of the world’s largest collections of artworks and archaeological objects from Asia, with a special focus on Japanese artefacts.
  • At lunch, create a product from antique Kimono fabric! In this workshop, learn the structure and touch the fabric, and create your own product upcycled from antique Kimono textiles.
  • Discover the mesmerizing world of digital art at Team Lab in Japan. Step into interactive installations that combine technology, art, and nature, creating immersive and ethereal experiences.

Day 4: Tokyo

  • It’s time for a hands-on craft workshop experience. Japanese culture is famed for its beautiful crafts – be it origami, tea-making, hand-weaving, tie dye and calligraphy – and an immersive crafting class provides students the opportunity to learn about their importance firsthand.
  • Take a walk through the district of Asakusa, where the atmosphere of ancient Tokyo survives. Discover the charming streets lined with traditional craft shops and street-food stalls and visit Sensoji Temple, one of Tokyo’s most colorful and popular Buddhist temples.
  • Enjoy some peace of mind through the historical practices of Japanese tea ceremony, and discover Zen with a nationally qualified tea master.
  • After discovering Zen, head to Akihabara, the “Electric Town”. Today, it’s a cultural epicentre in the city for anime and manga lovers, and is also home to Japan’s most famous J-pop group, AKB48.

Day 5: Kyoto

  • Today, transfer between Tokyo and Kyoto on the bullet train!
  • Tour the International Manga Museum – an amazing building which holds both permanent and special exhibitions, as well as housing over 300,000 individual publications. Learn about the history of manga in Japan, and watch as talented in-house manga artists put pen to paper.
  • Afterwards, take a stroll through the grounds of Kyoto’s Imperial Palace.
  • In the evening, step into the theatre at Gion Corner where you’ll see a traditional Japanese show. The program includes real geisha performing their traditional arts, as well as other Japanese performances of comedy, spoken word and dance.

Day 6: Kyoto

  • Wander through quaint side streets to the 1,200-year-old Kiyomizu Dera Temple, where you’ll enjoy postcard-worthy views over Kyoto.
