<\/span>Visit the historic Gyeongbokgung Palace and Bukchon Hanok village<\/span><\/span><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

Dating back to 1395, the imposing Gyeongbokgung Palace was once the principal residence of the Joseon dynasty<\/a>, which ruled over Korea for over five centuries. The walls of the enormous palace grounds house around 500 buildings, which are in the process of restoration having been damaged or destroyed during the Japanese occupation.  <\/span>Undoubtedly one of South Korea\u2019s most important historical sites, students will have the chance to tour the palace grounds which include the National Palace Museum of Korea and the National Folk Museum.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

North Korean citizens who escape the famously secretive dictatorship are automatically granted the right to resettle in the South.  <\/span>Our trip includes a question and answer session with a North Korean defector, allowing students to gain an insight into life in the DPRK, as well as the cultural upheaval that comes with journeying from North to South Korea. Another of the palaces built by the Joseon Dynasty, Changdeokgung is best known for its sprawling ornamental gardens. Originally used by the women of the palace, the beautiful gardens are now the perfect oasis away from the bright lights of Seoul. Students can look out for water features dating back to the 17th century and the five ornate pavilions contained within its walls. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/span>Witness history in the making at the DMZ<\/span><\/span><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

One of the most visited tourist destinations in South Korea, is also one of its most historically pertinent. The Korean Demilitarized Zone (DMZ), is a strip of land between North and South Korea that serves as a buffer zone between the two ideologically opposed states. The zone also houses the Joint Security Area, in which negotiations between the two countries take place. Established at the end of the Korean War in 1953, the DMZ is heavily guarded on both sides to prevent invading forces from either state crossing the border.
