From November 6-8, The Learning Adventure exhibited at the annual CIEE conference in Brooklyn, New York. This year\u2019s theme was \u201cOpening New Doors to Increase Diversity in Study Abroad\u201d. Evening receptions were graciously hosted by the Global Leadership League and by Diversity Abroad, an organization dedicated to increasing and supporting diverse student involvement in study abroad. Throughout the week, international education professionals traded innovative ways to increase access to study abroad.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/span>Luncheon<\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The presentation by CIEE\u2019s luncheon keynote speaker, Andr\u00e9 Robert Lee, was particularly impactful. He described the ways he uses his passion for film-making to fight for social justice and equality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lee\u2019s latest work was directing and producing The Prep School Negro<\/em>, a documentary about his time as a scholarship student in a predominantly white high school. Coming from a poor working-class neighborhood in Philadelphia, he suddenly found himself in a different world of privilege with access to opportunities that people with his upbringing could only imagine. Ever since then, the stark contrast between abject poverty and affluence went on to ignite his own painful investigation into institutional racism in America.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At the luncheon, he screened a clip from the documentary, spoke on how we can better address the racial disparities in study abroad and held a Q&A with the audience. His presentation encouraged the audience to examine minority under-representation in study abroad, consider minority students\u2019 challenges and ponder on how we can bridge that gap to make international education more accessible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/span>Ellis Island National Museum of Immigration<\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

This year\u2019s conference reception took place during the second evening of the week\u2019s programming on New York\u2019s famous Ellis Island, the country\u2019s former largest immigration processing center. The dinner reception was in the historic Registry Room, the very place where immigrants underwent harrowing medical and legal evaluations. A visit to Ellis Island was an excellent way to celebrate immigrants from all over the world and acknowledge their struggle to find opportunity in a new and unfamiliar land.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

All in all, our time in Brooklyn left us feeling energized with a positive outlook on diversity in study abroad. We returned to our offices, ready to share with the team all we had learned.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
