<\/span>St. Thomas’ Academy are just one of <\/span>the<\/span> US-based groups<\/span> we’ve had the pleasure of taking to Asia in 2023. In conjunction with The Learning Adventure<\/span>, they planned an ambitious tour of Japan and Taiwan,<\/span> taking in some of the top sights in each country. <\/span>Using<\/span> their Learning Adventure travel<\/span> diary<\/span>, <\/span>we\u2019ll<\/span> run through <\/span>the great experiences you could expect on your next tour with us!<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Day 1:<\/strong> <\/span>While battling a touch of <\/span>jet-lag<\/span>, the group’s first<\/span><\/span> stop in Tokyo was the Metropolitan Government Building<\/strong>, where the group were able to get their first unforgettable glimpse <\/span>of the Tokyo Skyline<\/span>. Then, to loosen up those limbs, it was off to the batting cages<\/strong> to <\/span>take part in one of Japan\u2019s most popular sports – baseball!<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Day 2<\/span><\/strong>: <\/strong>Today<\/span> saw the group ticking off some of the most famous areas of Tokyo, <\/span>including the Meiji Shrine<\/strong>, <\/span>Harajuku<\/strong>,<\/span> and Shibuya Crossing<\/strong>. The absolute highlight was the <\/span>hands-on sushi making class<\/strong><\/span> – with a few mixed results! <\/span>Interactive workshops like this are a crucial part of our tours, as we aim to avoid <\/span>passive travel wherever possible, instead replacing it with unique learning opportunities.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Day 3:<\/strong> <\/span>The Ikebukuro Life Safety Learning Centre<\/strong> is a wonderful, interactive museum which explores the <\/span>methods that Japan uses for disaster prevention. This includes a <\/span>very real earthquake simulation which students can experience,  making it a great visit for any students interested in geography or science. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

In complete contrast, the afternoon was spent discovering Senso-ji Temple<\/strong> – the most popular Buddhist temple in Tokyo – <\/span>and the surrounding area.<\/span> It\u2019s<\/span> one of the most famous spots in Tokyo and is surrounded by charming streets lined with stores. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Day 4:<\/strong> <\/span>After a visit to the <\/span>Japanese Sword <\/span>Museum<\/span><\/strong><\/span> to<\/span> see some examples of katanas<\/em>, the group took part in another must-do experience in Japan \u2013 a tea ceremony<\/strong>! <\/span>This involved making traditional sweets and sampling <\/span>various different<\/span> types of tea. <\/span>On the last night in Japan, the group <\/span>spent time exploring the <\/span>cutting edge<\/span> of technology and the latest in o<\/em><\/span><\/span>taku<\/em> culture in Tokyo\u2019s Electric Town \u2013 Akihabara<\/strong>.<\/span><\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Day 5: <\/span><\/strong>After an early morning flight from Tokyo<\/span> (taking in Mt Fuji from the air!)<\/span><\/span> the group arrived in Taipei<\/strong>, ready to explore Taiwan<\/span>! Their first day o<\/span>n the island involved a drive down to Nantou<\/strong>, <\/span>ready for a full day exploring <\/span>the area on Day 6.<\/span><\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Day 6<\/strong>: <\/span>Well rested, it was time to explore the stunning <\/span>Sun Moon Lake<\/span><\/strong>, which is one of Taiwan\u2019s <\/span>most picturesque spots. <\/span>The day began with a boat ride<\/strong> on the lake, then a <\/span>hike<\/strong> around the area to take in some nature and see the Wen Wu Temple<\/strong><\/a>. <\/span>Heading down from the lake into Taichung<\/strong>, <\/span>the students were able to enjoy the wonders of a night market<\/strong> for the first time, with <\/span>opportunities to buy snacks – and more importantly, bubble tea!<\/span><\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Day 7: <\/span><\/strong>This morning<\/span> started with a <\/span>hands-on<\/span> activity at Old Pot Farm<\/strong><\/span>, where the group were able to <\/span>produce some <\/span>traditional<\/span> food while learning all about life in this part of the world from locals. Then it was time to <\/span>travel back to Taipei, where the group were lucky enough to <\/span>witness<\/span> the yearly Dragon Boat Race<\/strong>!<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Day 8:<\/strong> <\/span>The day after the big race started<\/span> with an educational excursion to <\/span>the Taiwan Cement Daka Plant<\/strong>, where students were able to learn about <\/span>product manufacturing in Taiwan. <\/span>Afterwards, students continued exploring Taiwan’s stunning natural geography at <\/span>Qingshui<\/span><\/strong> Cliff<\/strong> in the Taroko Nat<\/span>ional Park<\/span> on the east coast of the island<\/span>.<\/span><\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Day 9:<\/strong> <\/span>Staying in the Hualien area, today offered two <\/span>really unique<\/span> opportunities \u2013 a dolphin-spotting boat cruise<\/strong> and <\/span>the chance to interact with an Indigenous tribe<\/strong>. <\/span>Thankfully, it was a gloriously sunny day out at sea and dolphins were spotted! <\/span>Afternoon activities with the tribe included learning to shoot a bow and arrow<\/span>, creating traditional jewellery, and <\/span>making a fire.<\/span><\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Day 10:<\/strong> <\/span>It was yet another sunny day<\/span>, so the morning bubble tea-making class<\/strong> was a very<\/em> welcome refreshment – as well as being<\/span> a great window into modern Taiwanese food <\/span>c<\/span>ulture.<\/span> In the afternoon, the group moved onto <\/span>Shifen<\/span><\/strong>, the largest town on the Pingxi railway, where they were able to create and release their own sky lanterns.<\/span><\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Day 11:<\/strong> More culinary explorations today with a make your own pineapple shortcake class<\/strong>! <\/span>This was followed by a visit to the observation deck of the iconic Taipei 101 tower<\/strong>,<\/span> and an exploration of the nearby Xinyi District<\/strong>. <\/span>Afterwards, students enjoyed <\/span>a <\/span>well-earned <\/span>change of pace at a nearby teahouse<\/strong>, and <\/span>visited <\/span>Ximending<\/span><\/strong> for souvenir shopping.<\/span><\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Day 12:<\/strong> Sadly, this was the last full day on tour before heading back to the USA! It began by watching the changing of the guards at the National Martyr\u2019s Shrine<\/strong>, which was really impressive. The afternoon was the designated service time, and the group gave something back by volunteering<\/strong> at the Taiwan Toy Association, where they helped with the cleaning and packaging of second hand toys going to children in need.<\/span> Then, a<\/span>fter one last delicious meal, it was time to get ready for departure after an amazing couple of weeks travel in Asia!<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n
