Classics School Trip to France

Today, students head into the centre of Nîmes to visit the famous amphitheatre. This impressive Roman building is so well-preserved that it’s still used for modern day events! Learn all about the spectacles that would have happened here during the Roman era.

You’ll then walk through the centre of Nîmes to the Romanite Museum. Here, students learn about the Roman occupation of the region, and can admire some of the exquisite remains found in and around the city.

Travel out of Nîmes to view the incredible Pont du Gard, one of the tallest Roman aqueducts ever built. Take in this magnificent feat of engineering, then visit the museum that explains all about Roman architecture. You’ll then head back to Nîmes for another delicious French dinner!

This morning, drive east to the Roman city of Glanum, once an important city of the region and now an impressive archaeological site. Students will learn about how Roman cities were developed, and explore the remains of different types of public and private buildings.

Next, you’ll drive onto another impressive Roman city, but one that is still occupied today – Arles. Visit the amphitheatre and museum that houses many Roman statues and artefacts, including a Gallo-Roman wooden river barge, complete with cargo!

In the late afternoon, you’ll return to Nîmes for dinner at a local restaurant. Spend some time at your leisure exploring the city’s streets – and treat yourself to an ice cream after a long day!

Sadly, today marks the end of your Classics school trip to France. This morning, you’ll check out and begin your journey home – taking a brand new insight into the Ancient world back with you!
