This 6-day geography school trip to Paris and Lyon takes students from the heart of the capital out into the French countryside. While fieldwork-orientated walking tours, hydroponic farm visits, and a hike up the Puy de Domes volcano enrich subject specific learning, the opportunity to explore Paris by boat and a city tour of Lyon allow students to get under the skin of French culture.

Day 1: Paris

Meet your Adventure Leader in France at Gare du Nord/Charles de Gaulle airport and hop on public transport to your hotel. On the way, they’ll give you some top tips about the area, and get you up to speed with trip rules and safety guidelines.

Once you’ve checked into the hotel, it’s time to start exploring! Take a boat ride along the River Seine, where you’ll stop off to climb the Eiffel Tower. Look out onto the city you’re about to explore and pick out some of the places you’ll be visiting.

Back on the ground, enjoy the view of the iconic Eiffel Tower from the Trocadero Esplanade, before ending the day feasting on a well-earned welcome dinner.

Day 2: Paris

Today, you’ll combine the chance to explore Paris further with some hands-on geography for a well-rounded day out. Students take part in a fieldwork project along the banks of the iconic River Seine, collecting evidence of erosion, deposition, and transport.

Hands washed, it’s time for a city tour to take in all of Paris’ must-sees, like the Notre Dame, Latin Quarter, Place de la Concorde, la Concergerie, Avenue des Champs-Elysées, Arc de Triomphe, Sainte Chapelle, Place Vendôme, Le pont de l’Alma (Lady Di memorial) and Port de La Bourdonnais.

Finally, end your day with dinner in the Montparnasse area, and take a trip up the Montparnasse Tower for spectacular views.

Day 3: Paris & Lyon

This afternoon, we’ll leave to make our way to the second stop on our trip: Lyon!

However, we won’t leave before we’ve paid a visit a to a fascinating farm that’s hidden right under the streets of Paris. Located in an abandoned parking garage, it’s the perfect place to learn about the agricultural technique of hydroponic farming, in which greens are grown under LEDs in nutrient-rich water – without sunlight or soil.

Arriving in Lyon in the late afternoon, students have time to settle in their new accommodation by being welcomed to the city in true French fashion – with a delicious dinner.

Day 4: Lyon

Did you know that there’s a volcano in France? Today, students spend a day out in nature, exploring the impressive Puy de Domes volcano – one of the youngest lava domes in the region.

They’ll challenge themselves with a hike to the summit, where they’ll be rewarded with not only spectacular views of that volcano, but multiple glimpses of others across the region. They’ll also be able to see cinder cones along the way, providing them with a in-person experience that brings geography to life.

After the hike, they can cool off with a swim and splash in Lac d’Aydat, before heading back to Lyon for a well-earned dinner in a local boucherie.

Day 5: Lyon

The region around Lyon continues to prove itself as a geography hotspot today, as students leave the city centre in search of Grotte de Choranche, a magnificent hidden cave south of Lyon. While they’re exploring this incredible cave, they’ll learn more about the waters of the underground rivers and lakes, rock formations and stalactites.

Heading back into the city centre, they’ll swap natural landmarks for historical ones on a tour of Lyon that introduces them to all the city’s most beautiful locations.

It’s then time to enjoy your final dinner in France, taking the opportunity to reflect on a wonderful school trip!

Day 6: Farewell

Sadly, today marks the end of your school trip to France, but we’re certain that France’s beautiful geography will follow you back to the classrom – and beyond!
